The movie Wonder Woman’s success has really turned Wonder Woman into something that the DCEU has not been able to produce, greatness. Looking at what Marvel and Robert Downey Jr was able to do with Iron Man and the impact on the MCU years later, the same thing can be shown for Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman as many of the things are similar between the two. Here are the reasons why, Wonder Woman is the star of the DCEU.

1. Critical and Commercial Success

With all the movies that the DCEU has released: Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, WW, and Justice League, it’s safe to say they haven’t had the success they wanted to with it. Yes all of their movies have made over $500 million, but many of them haven’t been well received. All expect for Wonder Woman haven’t even made it into the 60% mark on RT. Now a lot of people would say screw the critics, and although a movie is more than just what the critics say, DCEU movies highlight a problem with themselves. They aren’t well made. Not only that but it shows in the box offices, especially when although they make a lot of money, they still end up losing the studios money as they fail to break expectations such the case in Dawn of Justice and Justice  League. I mean come on, a movie featuring the world’s biggest icons for the first time should have easily got past 1 billion dollars, but it didn’t, and don’t get me started on Justice League’s box office performance. But when it came to Wonder Woman things changed. It broke box office records, was well received, and basically broke expectations. Some may say well expectation were set low coming off of Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad’s failure, and all though that may be the case, there was no denying that WW was a good movie.

2. Screentime

When looking at the 5 movies from the  DCEU, it’s important to look at the screen time of the characters. If we were to compare the amount of movies characters were in, and I mean actual roles not just cameos like Bruce Wayne and Flash in SS, or the email clips in BvS, we would see the score to be: WW: 3 (BvS, WW, JL), Superman: 3 (MoS, BvS, JL), and Batman: 2 (BvS and JL). It’s tied between Wonder Woman and Superman – Both had their solo movies, and were in Dawn of Justice along with Justice League. However if we were to look at the span of time it took for the two characters to be in those movies, we would see Wonder Woman appeared in the movies in a shorter span of time. It took Superman 4 years to be in 3 movies, while it only took Wonder Woman a year. With the release of Wonder Woman 1984 in 2019 next year, Wonder Woman will be in the most movies, 4, out of all characters of the DCEU, and she will do it in the shortest amount of time, 3 years. The fact that Wonder Woman is so visible in the DCEU is something that brings so much height to her star power.

3. Cultural Impact

Wonder Woman broke a lot of records for women film making. A lot of this can be contributed to Patty Jenkins as she has helped this for Gal Gadot. Wonder Woman being directed by a woman such as Patty Jenkins brought a lot of praises towards her. She gave speeches about women in Hollywood, and her personal experiences. The social aspect of Wonder Woman has given the two women a platform to speak on. Not to mention, the cultural impact that this film has, has transcended beyond movies itself which is something big for it, and the character.

4. Gal Gadot

When we look at the star of the MCU, we could think of either Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man or Chris Evans Captain America. Regardless of who it is, it’s important to look at the actor playing the character just as much as the character. The bond between the two is what brings out the greatness. The same can be said for Gal Gadot portraying Wonder Woman. Personally I feel like out of the biggest stars of the DCEU, actor and character considered: Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and even Jared Leto; Gal Gadot has been able to become to most out front representative of the DCEU. She is active on a world stage such as going to the UN, she’s active on social media, last year in 2017 she was all over the night shows and SNL. Gal Gadot has been able to amass such a presence for her life and career.  I believe it’s safe to say that she is star, and that stardom has translated over to making Wonder Woman the star of the DCEU.
